How to Make Natural Body Butter or Body Balm

By

Healthy Skin

Frequent hand washing and weather contribute to dry skin and lips. Chapped skin and lips are painful, often red and itchy with skin flaking off.

Moisturizing lotions are good for dry hands, but necessary hand washing removes the lotion. No-rinse hand sanitizers are full of alcohol which also dries the skin.

Natural Beeswax Lip and Body Balm

Natural Beeswax and Coconut Oil

Natural beeswax skin and lip balms create a protective barrier over dry skin so that frequent cleansing does not strip the skin of essential oil and moisture.

Coconut oil is a natural skin moisturizer used in many soap, lotion, and other skin care product recipes. Organic coconut oil is available in co-ops, natural food stores, and online.

Easy Recipe

This recipe calls for equal portions of clean beeswax and coconut oil.

Purchase beeswax from supply companies such as Dadant and Sons. Dadant and Sons delivers clean beeswax, but if you obtain beeswax that has particles in it follow the easy directions below to sift out the dirt.

For best results, purchase organic coconut oil from a local store or online.

  1. Place plastic bowl on kitchen scale and set to 0.
  2. Measure a portion of beeswax by weight. For example, 10 ounces.
  3. Place beeswax in top of double boiler.
  4. Measure out the same amount of coconut oil; in this example, 10 ounces.
  5. Place coconut oil in top of double boiler with the beeswax.
  6. Melt the two together. Stir gently with a spoon to mix.
  7. When completely melted and mixed, pour the hot liquid into a wide mouth cosmetic containers.
  8. Allow to cool.

Using Beeswax Body and Lip Balm

This balm will be hard to the touch at first. Hold a small amount in a loose fist and allow body heat to warm the balm. Spread the balm on hands, lips, and anywhere else that needs protection from water and wind.

Use this balm for both protection and prevention, as well as to heal already chapped skin and lips.

To Clean Beeswax

To remove any dirt and particles from natural beeswax, if necessary, place the beeswax in an old nylon stocking (or buy a very cheap pair for this purpose).

Place the full stocking in the top of a double boiler. Melt the wax. As the wax melts, the dirt particles will remain trapped in the stocking.

Dispose of stocking.

I'm so glad you find it helpful! I gave some most recently to a friend who works in a restaurant kitchen to help her hands.

I just came from your shampoo hub and link and I think I will try this recipe. Would like to add some lemon balm and or lavender to this? Would that work ok? Thanks for sharing!

Hi frogyfish, nice to meet you. This simple recipe certainly lends itself to additions as long as they don't irritate the skin. I think lemon balm has mosquito-repellant properties, right? Let me know how it goes.
